HINU Home Volume 6. Jordy Todd

Our HINU Home series explores the personal connection we have with our hair and the way rituals help bring us back home to ourselves.

"I've seen photos of my ancestors and I feel a strong connection to my roots through my hair. I see so much of myself in my great grandmothers. They were beautiful, tough, bush women."

Jordy is a 30-year-old single mother, surfer, budding jeweller, and experienced film portrait photographer. "Life outside is very important to me and sharing the natural wonders and beautiful playground we are so blessed to call home, here on stolen aboriginal land - something I plan to make sure Dylan (my 2yo daughter) understands from the beginning".

What inspires you creatively?

Funnily enough I never considered myself “creative” or an artist until recent years. Growing up I thought an artist was a painter or someone who draws and neither of those were my strong suit, however looking back at my childhood I’ve always been a maker, a builder and a creative. Something I hope to inspire in my daughter too.

It’s just a part of who I am and how my mind works and what brings me joy! I’m inspired by the natural world, always fascinated by history too. I think my style of jewellery, though I’m still very much developing my style and skill with this, and photography both take on a darker, more mystical element. I love honest and raw and real.

What relationship do you have with your hair? Has it evolved over the years?

My relationship with my hair! Growing up I had "difficult" hair. People would always comment how thick and hard to manage it must be, there weren't a lot of compliments thrown around, I remember one of my school friends telling me she thought I had nice hair but she wouldn't want to have it (lol).

I straightened and coloured it deep reds or dark browns/black my entire teen years and into my early 20s. Every day with a straightening iron. It wasn't until my mid 20s that I thought I might have something beautiful going on naturally.

My relationship to my hair has changed a lot since then. My heritage on my fathers side is Afghan/French. I've seen photos of my ancestors and I feel a strong connection to my roots through my hair. I see so much of myself in my great grandmothers. They were beautiful, tough, bush women. I wish I could've met them.

What hair rituals do you currently do?

My rituals these days include lots of sun and ocean time, hair oiling (thank you hinu) from scalp to ends once a week, and hinu for styling almost daily. I use a hair wash that only requires me to wash once every few days to a week now - Hair story for the plug! It's an incredible product for thick and textured hair, highly recommend along side Hinu.

As a busy single mum with little me time, small rituals for my skin and hair give me a moment to come back to myself. I love to take my Hinu oil and a comb to the beach and nourish myself in the sun while my daughter plays, going for a nice long swim after.
