It was about this time that I embarked on a journey to better understand and care for my hair and in doing so first found myself asking the question, 'How fast does hair grow, really?'. To my surprise, the answer was both reassuring and enlightening...
For most of my life, I didn't think about my hair at all. It grew day by day, never asking for attention.
That changed the day it seemed to stop. Suddenly I was obsessing over every strand, and what used to feel automatic became a source of real anxiety.
That's when I started asking the question so many of us ask eventually: how fast does hair grow, really? On average, hair grows about 1.3 cm (½ an inch) a month, roughly 15 cm (6 inches) a year.

Growth Rate Isn't the Whole Story
Hair health and coverage (how much hair is visibly covering your scalp) matter just as much as speed, and they're things you can influence far sooner than you can speed up growth itself.
Hair follicles are living structures. They cycle through growth (anagen), rest (catagen), and shedding (telogen) phases, and factors like stress, circulation, and nutrient supply all shape how well those cycles run. I couldn't force my hair to grow faster, but I could give my follicles better conditions to do their job.
The biggest shift wasn't scientific, though. It was letting go of comparison. Once I stopped measuring my hair against everyone else's timeline and started paying attention to my own (health and coverage first, growth second), the whole process got easier to live with.
If you're asking "how fast does hair grow?" because you're worried about your own, here's what I'd tell you: the number matters less than the intention you bring to it. Stress won't speed anything up. Consistency will.

During my second pregnancy my hair has changed drastically. All of a sudden it’s shedding, greasy at the scalp and dry at the ends. I decided to stop shampooing and conditioning with anything other than apple cider vinegar. It’s been a few months now and I’m starting to notice new growth. I’m excited to start over with a new routine with HINU after giving my hair and scalp a little reset!
Hello Allie
I am using Hinu oil in a weekly routine before I shampoo/conditioner.
I go to my hairdresser every 2-months for colour treatment and trim every 6-months.
At 67 what growth should I expect?
Andy
Consistency and lack of comparison are the two I am focusing on this time around 💚 recently shaved my head and excited to watch my hair come back in and go through its phases. Just got my hinu hair oil and can’t wait to start incorporating it. Thank you for a lovely post
