5 Habits That Are Secretly Ruining Your Hair Growth

You're doing everything right, or so you think. Here's what's actually standing between you and your healthiest hair yet.

01. Skipping Deep Scalp Cleansing

Your scalp is skin. It builds up oil, product residue and environmental debris just like the skin on your face. When that build-up isn't properly cleared, it sits on the follicle and slows growth at the root. A quick shampoo is maintenance. A weekly deep cleanse is what actually keeps your scalp in good condition for growth.

Start by applying a scalp oil and allowing it to absorb before washing. When you shampoo, double cleanse to make sure all build-up has been properly lifted and washed away. On your second lather, gently work through the scalp with a scalp massager using light circular motions. This loosens residue, boosts circulation and ensures nothing is left behind.

02. Brushing Too Aggressively

Wet hair is fragile. Pulling a brush through it from root to tip puts stress on the cuticle that it simply cannot handle. The breakage is gradual, so it rarely feels dramatic, but over time it means your ends are snapping off as fast as your roots are growing. Length retention becomes almost impossible.

Always detangle from ends to roots using a brush designed to move through hair without forcing it. Apply a few drops of hair oil first to create slip and reduce resistance.

03. Wearing Tight Hairstyles Too Often

Daily tension on the hairline adds up. Tight ponytails, slicked buns and braids worn repeatedly in the same position can lead to traction alopecia, a gradual thinning that usually starts at the temples. It develops slowly, which is exactly why it often goes unnoticed until it is quite advanced.

Alternate between tight styles and looser, low-manipulation looks to give your hairline a break. And when you do tie your hair up, always reach for a silk scrunchie. Unlike elastic or synthetic bands, silk has a smooth surface that glides over the hair rather than gripping it. This means significantly less friction, fewer broken strands at the ponytail point, and hair that holds its moisture rather than having it stripped away by rougher materials. It is a small swap that makes a genuinely noticeable difference.

04. Applying Heat Without Protection

Heat tools operate at temperatures that break down the protein bonds in your hair. Without a protectant, even occasional use causes the cuticle to lift and weaken over time. Your roots may be growing steadily, but if the ends are deteriorating faster, you will never see the length.

Apply a heat protectant before every blow-dry and styling session, no exceptions. Keep tools below 185°C and limit direct heat to twice a week where possible.

05. Not Getting Enough Protein

Hair is made of keratin, which is a protein. When the body is not getting enough through diet, it redirects resources away from hair growth toward more essential functions. The result is increased shedding, slower growth and hair that feels thinner or more brittle than usual. It is one of the most common and most overlooked causes of stalled growth.

Aim for 0.8 to 1g of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. Eggs, fish, legumes and Greek yoghurt are good places to start. Pair a protein-rich diet with a nourishing hair oil to support scalp health from the inside and outside.
