Kai Avent-deLeon is a New York–based creative director, facilitator, and mother, best known as the founder of Sincerely, Tommy and the community-led initiative Building Black Bed-Stuy. We met with her at her quiet home in the Catskill Mountains of southeastern New York to explore her relationship with hair, self-care, and the practices that anchor her daily life.

What is your relationship with your hair? And how has it evolved over time?
I appreciate being low maintenance so the least amount of time I can spend on my hair the better! I have been more into twisting my hair for a protective style lately because of how low maintenance it is.
What inspired you to embrace your natural hair?
My parents never let me wear hair in any style other than its natural state so I guess I have always embraced it.

Do you have any hair rituals?
I wish I did, but I am so low maintenance and should probably incorporate some. I do my son's hair every other week accompanied with a head massage and moisturizing sizing his scalp, which he loves.

Going to nature, meditation, being at home in my own energy.
What brings you the most fulfillment and happiness?
My son, traveling, being in love, friends that see you and hear you, a good book and film.
