Washing your hair isn’t just about getting clean — it’s a chance to care for your scalp, reset your roots, and set the tone for healthy growth. Over time, we’ve figured out a few simple rules that actually make a difference. No overcomplicated routines, no unnecessary steps — just a few habits we genuinely stick to, and why they’re worth it.
1. Start with a pre-wash brush
Before even stepping into the shower, gently brush your hair to remove tangles and help distribute natural oils from your scalp through to your ends. It’s a simple step that can reduce breakage and make washing easier.
2. Oil your hair before washing
For extra nourishment and to support growth, apply a light layer of hair growth oil to your scalp and strands at least an hour before washing. Use your fingers or a scalp massager to work the oil in, helping to spread it evenly and boost circulation. This simple step can protect moisture levels during cleansing, encourage healthy growth, and leave your hair feeling softer, stronger, and more hydrated.
3. Focus on your scalp
Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. When shampooing, use your fingertips (not your nails) to gently massage your scalp, lifting dirt, oil, and buildup while boosting circulation. You can also bring in a scalp massager during your wash for an even deeper, more refreshing clean.
4. Less is more with shampoo
You don’t need to use a mountain of shampoo. A small, coin-sized amount is often enough. Too much can actually strip the scalp and hair of natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.
5. Rinse thoroughly (then rinse again)
Leftover product can cause build-up and weigh hair down. Spend an extra minute making sure you rinse everything out completely. If you think you’re done, give it one more rinse just to be sure.
6. Condition with care
Apply conditioner mainly to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, where moisture is most needed. Avoid the scalp unless you’re using a product specifically designed for scalp hydration. Let it sit for a few minutes to work its magic before rinsing.
7. Turn down the heat
Hot water can feel amazing but it can also strip moisture from your hair and scalp. Try using lukewarm water for washing and a quick cool rinse at the end to help seal the hair cuticle for extra shine.
8. Be gentle when drying
Wet hair is more fragile. Instead of rubbing your hair with a towel, gently squeeze out excess water and pat dry. Better yet, use a soft cotton T-shirt or a microfiber towel to reduce friction and frizz.
9. Listen to your hair
Everyone’s hair is different. Some need to wash every few days, others once a week. Pay attention to what your scalp and strands are telling you rather than sticking to a rigid schedule.
A few small tweaks to your washing routine can lead to stronger, shinier, and healthier hair over time. Take your time, be gentle, and treat hair wash day as a ritual, a moment to care for yourself and your roots, literally.
