Pregnancy and Hair Growth
Pregnancy is a time of great change and transformation in the body, and one of the many ways this manifests is through changes in hair growth.
At its core, hair growth is a beautiful example of the intricate interplay between biology and the natural world. The growth cycle of hair is made up of three phases - anagen, catagen, and telogen - each with its own unique role to play. During the anagen phase, hair grows steadily, with new cells being added at the root of the hair. During the catagen phase, hair growth slows down, and during the telogen phase, the hair falls out and the cycle starts anew.
During pregnancy, a woman's body undergoes many changes, including an increase in estrogen levels. This increase can lead to prolonged anagen phases, which in turn can result in increased hair growth and a fuller, thicker head of hair. The blood flow to the scalp also increases during pregnancy, further promoting healthy hair growth.
However, it's important to note that not all women experience increased hair growth during pregnancy, and that many other factors can come into play. Nutritional deficiencies, stress, genetics, medications, and medical conditions can all have an impact on hair growth, and it's important to take a holistic approach to wellness in order to support healthy hair growth.
If you're experiencing changes in your hair during pregnancy, I encourage you to take a step back and reflect on your overall health and wellbeing. Are you getting enough of the nutrients your body needs? Are you managing your stress levels effectively? Are you taking time to connect with the natural world around you? All of these factors can play a role in supporting healthy hair growth and a healthy pregnancy overall.
As always, I encourage you to approach this topic with curiosity and respect for the complex systems at work in our bodies and in the natural world. Let us honour the wisdom of the body, and seek to nourish it in every way we can.
