Wooden combs in Japan were once believed to have shamanic qualities. Women would brush their black hair thinking that the combs would gather each strand’s spiritual energy. In later years they became used to create elaborate hairdos for the geisha. Today the combs are acknowledged as a traditional craft and appreciated for their function as everyday tools. Jusan-Ya is renowned for their high-quality versions.

Family-run since 1875, Jusan-Ya continues to handcraft combs in the original methods of the Nara period at their Kyoto based workshop.

BENEFITS

1. Anti-Static Smoothness
Boxwood carries natural anti-static properties, helping to calm frizz and flyaways effortlessly. Unlike plastic combs that generate static electricity, a boxwood comb gently smooths the hair’s surface, creating a sleeker, softer finish without the need for synthetic products.

2. Gentle on Hair and Scalp
Each tooth of a traditional boxwood comb is individually hand-sawn, tapered, and polished until perfectly smooth. This fine craftsmanship ensures the comb glides effortlessly through hair, preventing snagging and breakage. The rounded, carefully spaced teeth massage the scalp as they move, offering a gentle, therapeutic touch that plastic combs cannot replicate.

3. Natural Oil Distribution
As you glide a boxwood comb through your hair, it helps distribute the scalp’s natural oils evenly along the hair shaft. This natural conditioning process enhances shine, protects against dryness, and strengthens hair from root to tip — promoting healthier, more vibrant strands over time.

4. Stimulates Healthy Hair Growth
The way a boxwood comb is crafted — with smooth, rounded teeth and thoughtful spacing — is designed to gently stimulate the scalp. This daily massage improves blood circulation, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles and supporting stronger, healthier hair growth.

5. Timeless Durability
Handcrafted from dense, fine-grained boxwood, these combs are built to last for generations. With minimal care, such as occasional oiling with natural oils like camellia, a boxwood comb matures beautifully — deepening in color, becoming even smoother, and serving as a trusted companion through the years.

HOW TO USE

The 40-Year Boxwood Comb Process

1. Growing the Boxwood Tree (30 Years)

Boxwood grows very slowly. It can take 30 years or more for the tree to reach the size and density needed for quality comb-making wood. The slow growth results in extremely tight, fine-grained wood — which is what makes it perfect for delicate things like comb teeth.

2. Harvesting and Cutting: only mature, healthy boxwood is selected.

3. Drying the Wood (10 Years), the boxwood is air-dried slowly — not kiln-dried quickly like modern woods.

A slow, 10-year drying process ensures the wood stabilises naturally, locking in strength and preventing later problems. Only after those 40 years is the wood ready to be crafted into a comb, following the detailed hand-shaping, cutting, and polishing process.

The final comb has unparalleled durability, a silky feel, and won’t easily warp or snap.

This method keeps alive ancient techniques that prioritize patience, respect for natural materials, and quality over mass production.
