"I feel like pregnancy and birth have birthed me anew. I feel more embodied and empowered than I have ever felt before"

Marianne Roussety is a 29-year-old artist and mama living in Byron Bay, Australia, known for her soulful, nature-inspired work across various creative mediums.

How has becoming a mother changed the way you see yourself?

I feel like pregnancy and birth have birthed me anew. I feel more embodied and empowered than I have ever felt before. During birth I met myself as a really strong and fearless woman, which was an amazing experience that has changed and moved me in many ways.

Also now that I am a parent, I see the importance of self love and respect, as this reflects the way our children see themselves.

What stands out to you the most about your postpartum experience?

Where to start haha! Postpartum is a huge experience and it doesn’t just stop after the baby is a few months old in my opinion. I feel like we don’t talk enough the importance of nourishing the mother after birth. Nourishing food, nourishing touch and rest to replenish properly. Postpartum has been a big initiation for me and I am still learning so much even 1 and a half year in.

How has your perception of motherhood changed since becoming a parent?

I have so much more respect and gratitude for all parents out there. Being a parent, a mother is such a big role and it really deserves to be celebrated.

What relationship do you have with your hair? Has it evolved over the years?

My relationship with my hair has evolved a lot over the years. Being a woman of colour with super curly hair and also living in a town where there wasn’t a lot of cultural diversity, I wanted to be like everybody around me.

I hated my curly hair so I started straightening it from age 7-8 till I was about 20 years old, until my perspective changed at 20 and I slowly started embracing my natural hair. I love my natural curls now and I love to take good care of it with weekly rituals.

What hair rituals do you currently do?

I use Hinu oil once or twice a week. It’s my absolute favourite and it has the best smell ever. I usually put in on in the evening or before bed and wash it the next day. I’ve also recently added the scalp massager to help stimulate growth and I really enjoy giving my hair that extra love it deserves.
