The Worst Thing You Can Do for Hair Growth

After losing a significant amount of hair due to stress, I made the mistake many of us do: I obsessed over the lengths and ends. I tried every mask, serum, and “miracle” product aimed at repairing split ends, but nothing truly worked.

The truth is, healthy hair growth starts at the root, not the tip. Your hair emerges from follicles in the scalp, which are living structures that need proper care and nourishment. If your follicles are stressed, inflamed, or starved of nutrients, no conditioner, mask, or serum will fix the problem. The ends might look temporarily shinier, but without a healthy foundation, growth will always lag, and breakage will continue.

Why the Scalp Is the Key

Hair follicles are tiny organs beneath the surface of your scalp. They cycle through phases of growth (anagen), rest (telogen), and shedding (catagen). Factors like stress, poor circulation, hormonal shifts, and nutrient deficiencies can shorten the growth phase, thin the hair, or even trigger shedding.

Oiling and massaging the scalp directly supports follicle health in several ways:

Increased blood flow: Massage stimulates circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the follicles. Healthy follicles = stronger, faster-growing hair.

Reduced tension and inflammation: Stress can restrict blood flow and trigger inflammation in the scalp. Gentle massage soothes the skin, reduces inflammation, and encourages follicles to function optimally.

When the scalp is healthy, follicles enter the growth phase more effectively, shedding slows, and new hair emerges thicker, stronger, and shinier. Once the roots are thriving, the lengths and ends naturally follow.

My Hair-Saving Oiling Routine

Here’s the routine that transformed my hair:

Choose a nourishing oil
I use the hair growth oil, rich in botanicals that support scalp health and strengthen hair from the root.

Massage for at least 5 minutes
Gently massage a few drops into your scalp in circular motions. This stimulates circulation, relaxes tension, and ensures the oil reaches every follicle. You can use your fingers, but i like to use a scalp massager or jade scalp stimulator.

Leave the oil for at least 30 minutes
This gives your scalp time to absorb nutrients and for follicles to soak in the benefits. Overnight application works too if you prefer a deeper treatment.

Wash and nourish ends
Wash with a gentle shampoo, ensuring there is no oil residue left on the scalp. Then i apply a small amount of oil to the ends to prevent breakage and lock in moisture.

Repeat consistently
Once or twice a week, this routine strengthens follicles, promotes growth, and improves overall hair health.

The biggest lesson I learned? Don’t obsess over the ends. Focus on the roots. Give your scalp the care it deserves with oil, massage, and patience. Once your follicles are happy, the hair itself will follow, thicker, healthier, and glowing with vitality.
